Marketing engineer job description

The short answer: most postings for this role fail before the first interview, because they list channels and tools instead of deciding four things: who signs off on the definition of a lead, what the hire may switch off, which number they own in the first quarter, and where the written artifacts live. A usable posting is those four decisions plus six lines — what the role owns end to end, the one channel it owns first, the event that ends a test, the volume actually on hand, the two systems it must write to, and the artifact due in each of the first four weeks. Everything below is written to be pasted into a posting.

Six lines, and what they usually say instead

Left column: the line as it appears in the posting. Right column: the version that can be interviewed against.

What the posting usually saysWhat to write instead
The title“Marketing Engineer” next to a list of channelsOne sentence on what the role owns end to end, because the title alone maps to five different jobs
The unit of work“Own paid, email, SEO and social”The one channel or loop the hire owns first, with the measurement around it
What counts as a result“Grow leads” / “improve ROAS”The event that ends the test, written by the person who will act on it, not by the person hiring
The volume on hand“We have a big list and a decent budget”The number behind it: a strict test at a 3% base rate needs 13,914 contacts per arm
The toolsEight logos, one of which is a CRM nobody logs intoThe two systems the hire has to write to on day one, and who owns the data model
The first 30 days“Get up to speed and propose a strategy”One artifact per week that exists after the week ends — a definition, a dashboard, a stop rule

Four decisions to make before the posting goes live

These are the parts that cannot be delegated to the candidate.

Who the hire reports to, and who signs off on the definition

If marketing and sales both own “lead”, the first argument in the JD is also the last one the hire will have.

What the hire is allowed to switch off

A role with no kill rule gets no verdict: campaigns run until somebody gets bored. Name the stop condition in the posting.

Which number the hire can move in the first quarter

A posting that promises pipeline in 90 days without naming the volume behind it is a posting that will be re-opened in 120 days.

Where the artifacts live

Dashboards, definitions and stop rules have to be readable by the next hire. A JD that does not mention a written record is hiring a contractor with a salary.

The number that belongs in the posting

A strict two-variant test at a 3% base rate and a +20% relative lift needs 13,914 contacts per arm27,828 in total — at 80% power and alpha 0.05. That is the number to compare against the volume the company actually has, and the reason so many of these roles are judged on noise: at a few hundred contacts a month no channel can be read, so the honest posting asks for a cheaper readable unit (a reply instead of a sale), a higher base rate (a tighter list or a sharper promise), or a smaller claim about what will be known in a quarter. When the readable unit is the reply, an email test needs 1,500–2,000 sends per variant. Compute your own floor before you promise a quarter, write the stop rule before you write the posting, and generate the posting from the level and surfaces you actually have.

Questions hiring managers ask before writing this posting

What should a marketing engineer job description contain?

Four decisions and six lines. The decisions: who signs off on the definition of a lead, what the hire may switch off, which number they own in the first quarter, and where the artifacts live. The lines: what the role owns end to end, the one channel it owns first, the event that ends a test, the volume actually on hand, the two systems it must write to, and the artifact due in each of the first four weeks.

How is a marketing engineer job description different from a growth marketer posting?

A growth posting describes tactics the hire will run; a marketing engineering posting describes the measurement the hire will build. The practical test: if the posting can be filled by somebody who never writes a definition or a stop rule, it is a growth posting with a new title.

Do I need a marketing engineer if I already have an agency?

Only if the argument you keep having is about which number decides. An agency runs channels; if the deliverables are readable and the definition is written, keep the agency and add measurement. If every month ends with the same unanswered question about which channel worked, the missing role is the engineering one.

What volume does the role need before it can be judged?

At a 3% base rate and a +20% relative lift, a strict two-variant test needs 13,914 contacts per arm — 27,828 in total — at 80% power and alpha 0.05. Put that number in the JD or the hire will be judged on noise within a quarter.

Can I write the job description myself?

Yes, and it is the cheapest part to get right. The free job description generator builds one from level, surfaces and the systems you actually have; the same generator ships in the CLI as the jd command if you prefer to run it locally.

What should the interview ask for?

One artifact the candidate produced before you met them: a definition of a lead, a stop rule, a dashboard with a volume floor on it, or a written record of a channel that was killed and why. Ask what the number was and what they did when it was not reached.

What I sell, in those terms

A hiring review and a working test loop: Sprint $900 (the definition, the dashboard and the stop rule written down), Engine $1,900/month (one channel end to end with a written record), Full Build $2,900. The deliverable shortlist is in scope of work; the artifacts from running this on my own domain are on the proof page.
