How to become a marketing engineer

The short answer: you do not become one by finishing a course. You become one by shipping three public, dated artifacts that carry a number — a page that converts, a tool that works for a stranger, and a written record of what you killed. One channel, one measurement stack, and an offer a client can read in 60 seconds. That portfolio replaces the degree, the certificate and the interview story.

The five steps

01. Pick one channel and stay there for a quarter

Cold email, SEO/AEO, or paid. Not all three. Marketing engineers are hired for depth in one channel plus the ability to measure it — generalists who touch everything produce nothing you can read.

02. Build the measurement before you build the campaign

One event that matters, in your own analytics property, readable the same day. If you cannot say what number your work moved, the work is a hobby with an invoice attached.

03. Ship three artifacts in public, with dates

A live page, a tool people can use, a repo with the method in it. Public and dated beats a private success story nobody can open. This is the whole portfolio — nothing else survives a hiring call.

04. Learn to write the offer, not the pitch

Scope, price, and what the client can open to check the work — in numbers. Most marketing people never get past adjectives; the invoice is paid for the shortlist of deliverables.

05. Put the receipts where an answer engine can read them

schema, sitemap, llms.txt, IndexNow, an archived snapshot the day you publish. If you are selling AEO work, your own site is the first case study anyone checks.

These are not salary bands or job descriptions — they are the difference in what a person can show. Nothing here is quoted from a salary survey; the numbers on this site are the packages and the test-size floors, both of which are published and reproducible.

What the work is not

Frequently asked

Is marketing engineer a real job title?

It is a used title, mostly in startups that need one person to own acquisition end to end: channel work plus the measurement and automation around it. The daily work is closer to engineering than to campaign management, which is why the title sticks.

Do you have to code to become a marketing engineer?

No, but you have to be able to read and write enough to wire systems: an API call, a webhook, a script that pulls a report, SQL or a spreadsheet formula that holds. If every number has to be hand-copied, you are not doing the job yet.

How long does it take to move into the role?

Three to six months of deliberate practice if you already work in marketing, measured in shipped artifacts rather than courses: one channel mastered, one measurement stack, three public deliverables with dates on them.

Is a degree required?

No. What is required is something a client or a hiring manager can open: a live page, a tool, a repository with the method in it, and one number you moved with a before and after.

What portfolio do people actually check?

Three things: a page you built that converts, a tool that does real work for a stranger, and a written record of a decision — what you killed and what the number was. Screenshots of ads do not survive the second question.

How do you prove you moved a number when the client owns the data?

Agree on the event and the baseline before the work starts, and ask for read access to the analytics property. Public artifacts on your own domain are the fallback: the method, the calculator and the write-up stay openable years later.

Do it with the receipts in place

Everything described above I do for clients, and the artifacts from doing it for myself are public: the proof page lists each one with a date and a link. If you want the work done for you instead of learning it, the packages are on pricing and the shortlist of deliverables is in scope of work: Sprint $900, Engine $1,900/month, Full Build $2,900.
